A deviated septum is a condition where the bone and cartilage that divide the nasal cavity is off-center, making it hard to breathe.
Some of the most common symptoms include nasal congestion, headaches, nosebleeds, facial pain, postnasal drip, and loud breathing or snoring during sleep. A deviated septum can also be the cause for sleep apnea and chronic sinus infections.
Causes of Deviated Septum
It is estimated that 80% of people have a deviated septum. A deviated septum can be caused by trauma, be present at birth, or be part of normal development.
Treatment Options
A septoplasty is done to repair a deviated septum and improve breathing. During the procedure, a surgeon enters through the nostrils and makes a small incision in the septum to remove the excess bone and cartilage needed to even out the breathing space. Internal splints or soft packing material may be put in the nose to stabilize the septum as it heals. A septoplasty may also be combined with a sinus surgery.
